MIDI retrofit kits for Polysynths, Monosynths & Drum Machines

We have recently re-designed the circuit boards for Roland TR-808, & Yamaha CS80 / CS60 / CS50
and re-introduced them to the range.

If you are thinking of fitting a MIDI retrofit yourself, there are a few points you should consider...

  • MIDI kits should ideally be fitted by qualified service personnel, Kenton can accept no responsibility for any damage resulting from incorrect fitting of our kits. What this means is that you must have first-class soldering skills and some basic electronics experience.

  • There is no difference in functionality between kits and in-house retrofits.

  • Except for tools for the job, our kits contain everything you need for your retrofit, from the MIDI boards and instructions, right down to the labels and the screws.

  • You will only need standard tools, such as screwdrivers, cutters, a soldering iron and a drill to perform most tasks. However, a 16mm round chassis punch and a pop rivet gun are also required for some installations.

  • A few of our retrofits are not available as kits. Either because they're just too damn fiddly, or because we are asked for them so infrequently it isn't worth producing a pre-packaged self-install kit.

  • Most kits comprise a large digital circuit board, a smaller analogue circuit board, a lead pack (containing all necessarry cables etc. - which are all pre-prepared and tinned), a small pack (containing MIDI sockets, nuts, bolts, washers etc.) and fitting & user instructions.

If, after reading the above, you would rather us operate on your precious baby, please do take care when sending us your synth. It must be flight-cased, as we cannot be held responsible for damage caused during transit and always insure the consignment. If necessary, we can recommend a good courier. (Take special care with TB-303s and TR-606s, as the controls are soldered directly to the main circuit board. If, during transit, pressure is applied to the knobs, irrepairable damage may be caused. One way to avoid such risk is to place a block of firm, expanded polystyrene on the top of the synth, in such a manner that it stands proud of all existing protrusions.)

All kits are splendid and will provide you with years of fault-free service, of that we are confident.

If you live in the UK, we can also retro-fit your synth at our premises Before buying one of our retrofits it is important to decide whether you would like it in kit form, or would prefer us to fit it for you. However, please bear in mind that, if you are an overseas customer, it is virtually impossible to get the synth to us in one piece unless you can deliver and pick it up personally, so a kit is your best option. However we can recommend dealers and engineers around the world who are able to fit it our kits, so contact us or check out our Authorised Dealers page for more information.
